Jane Goodall Institute

Dr. Jane Goodall with Martha, Marcela, and August

Founded in 1977, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) continues Dr. Goodall’s pioneering research on chimpanzee behavior—research that transformed scientific perceptions of the relationship between humans and animals. Today, the Institute is a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. It also is widely recognized for establishing innovative community-centered conservation and development programs in Africa, and Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, the global environmental and humanitarian youth program, which has groups in more than 120 countries. For more information, please visit www.janegoodall.org.

JGI recognized early on that human health and well-being are intricately woven into the survival of the world’s endangered species. In 1998, JGI began incorporating economic development and community health initiatives into its existing conservation program.

JGI was keen to add cervical cancer screening to its health projects when approached by Grounds for Health. JGI’s long history and track record in Tanzania made the Institute a perfect partner for us. In June 2009, our collaboration with JGI helped introduce screening and treatment for the first time ever to the women of the Kigoma region.

JGI helps Grounds for Health train and supervise community health promoters and medical staff; conducts training sessions in Swahili; and helps facilitate communications between our team and Tanzanian partners in Kigoma and the capital of Dar es Salaam.

Kanyovu Cooperatives

Kanyovu Cooperative

Kanyovu Cooperative

Kanyovu Cooperatives is our in-country coffee partner in Tanzania, and—as with all of our cooperative partnerships—is essential in developing community trust for the program, recruiting community health promoters, and providing critical transportation for women to reach these life-saving services.

Sustainable Harvest

Our program in Kigoma is also enhanced by our collaboration with specialty coffee importer Sustainable Harvest. This community-conscious organization has been a great friend on the ground in Kigoma, helping with logistics, supplies, and the language barrier. Simply put, Sustainable Harvest has made our long-distance work possible.

ICAP

Beginning in June 2010, Grounds for Health will train professionals from the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) in the delivery of the Single Visit Approach to cervical cancer screening and treatment. ICAP will then begin to roll out the program throughout their system of 123 AIDS Care and Treatment Centers in Kigoma.

Other Partnerships

Our partnerships with other international NGOs create the potential to expand our reach beyond these areas to a more global scale. The Kigoma project has been named one of five national demonstration programs by the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and has the potential for impacting the face of cervical cancer in the country.
