The Future

Game-Changing Opportunity

We’ve been working hard on a new organizational strategy that could change the way the world thinks about cervical cancer prevention. We are close to launching an exciting new campaign that will leverage new technologies through new protocols to focus specifically on women who have persistent cases of the human papilloma virus, the precursor to cervical cancer.

While we helped pioneer the Single Visit Approach, which has become the gold standard for cervical cancer screening and same-day treatment in hard-to-reach places, we pride ourselves on being innovative and staying nimble.

Grounds for Health is poised to demonstrate how new diagnostic and treatment methods can be used with the single visit approach. This will allow us and others to dramatically scale up our screening and treatment programs and fewer women will die of cervical cancer

Known Precursor

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is found in about 99% of cervical cancers.

Targeted Treatment

Treat only women with persistent HPV = more effective programs.

Human Papillomavirus

From the World Health Organization:

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of viruses that are extremely common worldwide.
  • There are more than 100 types of HPV, of which at least 13 are cancer-causing (also known as high risk type).
  • HPV is mainly transmitted through sexual contact and most people are infected with HPV shortly after the onset of sexual activity.
  • Cervical cancer is caused by sexually acquired infection with certain types of HPV.
  • Two HPV types (16 and 18) cause 70% of cervical cancers and precancerous cervical lesions.
  • There is also evidence linking HPV with cancers of the anus, vulva, vagina and penis.
  • Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women living in less developed regions with an estimated 445 000 new cases in 2012 (84% of the new cases worldwide).
  • In 2012, approximately 270 000 women died from cervical cancer; more than 85% of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
